Pokemon FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions about Pokemon games, mechanics, and strategies.

Basic Questions

What are shiny Pokemon?
Shiny Pokemon are extremely rare variants with different coloration. They have a 1/4096 base chance (or 1/8192 in older games) of appearing. They sparkle when entering battle and have a special symbol in their summary. Shiny status doesn't affect stats, only appearance.
How many Pokemon are there?
As of Generation 9 (Scarlet/Violet), there are 1025 Pokemon species. This includes all forms from Generation 1 (Kanto) through Generation 9 (Paldea). Each generation adds approximately 70-150 new Pokemon.
What's the difference between physical and special moves?
Physical moves use the Attack stat and target Defense (marked with an orange/red burst icon). Special moves use Special Attack and target Special Defense (marked with a purple swirl icon). Status moves don't deal damage but cause effects (marked with a gray icon).
What is STAB?
STAB stands for "Same Type Attack Bonus." When a Pokemon uses a move that matches its type, the move's power is multiplied by 1.5x. For example, a Water-type Pokemon using a Water-type move gets STAB, making the move 50% stronger.
How do I catch legendary Pokemon?
Legendary Pokemon typically have very low catch rates. Tips for catching them:
  • • Lower their HP to red (1-10% remaining)
  • • Inflict sleep or paralysis status
  • • Use Timer Balls after many turns, or Dusk Balls at night/in caves
  • • Save before the encounter in case you fail
  • • Master Ball guarantees capture but save it for roaming legendaries
